Momentum at the Finish Line
The 2008-2009 Postprandial year will end on June 30th and new officers will brainstorm to initiate goals and objectives for the 2009-2010 year beginning July 1st. My reflection of this year brings with it a great pride of how the executive team came together early on and began a great year planning and bringing forth a slew of goals to re-energize the club for it’s members. Some of the goals that were accomplished include: The Website having a fresh look and allowing more applications available all the time, the induction of 12 new members into our ranks, shaking up our meetings with new and interesting themes and formats, and bringing back our traditional family picnic and brunch. Early on we were able to achieve the Toastmasters President’s Distinguished Club honor; the first in District 65 this year. Congratulations to the members that will carry on the Postprandial torch next year: President-elect, Dave Pope; V.P. Education-elect, Ed Oberhofer; V.P. Membership-elect, Glenn Burdett; V.P. Public Relations-elect, Mark Frisk; Treasurer-elect, Sudipta Das; Secretary-elect, Allison Moreland; and Sergeant-at-Arms-elect, Allen Cantoni. Enjoy the leadership opportunity it has afforded those who came before you.

Postprandial Brings Home the Trophies…Yes, That’s Plural
Area 6 Governor and Postprandial member Kate Olsen organized and hosted a great Area 6 contest. The room at Napa Gino’s was full and our newest Postprandial member, Diana Robinson, was Contest Master.
First up was the Evaluation Contest and Linda Olson from Speak Up Toastmasters provided the evaluators with a wonderful test speech. The evaluation contest had two participants. Gil Stern, of Postprandial, evaluated Linda’s speech first. Straight out of the gate Gil wowed us with his exemplary use of the sandwich approach to evaluation. His vocal quality, vocal variety and a spectacular evaluation without notes made it easy for the judges to mark their ballots with high marks in every area. The evaluation contest’s second evaluator was Nancy Hines of the Toastitarians. Postprandial’s Gil Stern brought home first place and advanced on to the Central Division Contest. Congratulations to both Gil and Nancy Hines!
The International Speech Contest had three participants. Postprandial’s Dave Pope spoke first and showed the crowd how an International Speech is done right. I still have chills from witnessing his terrific orchestration throughout the speech. From beginning to end the words, gestures, vocal variety, and mannerisms captivated the audience. Paul China of of B&L Visionary and Shirley Malone of Toastitarians were the other participants, and second and third place respectfully. Dave Pope brought home first place and he advances on to the Central District Contest along with Gil.
Other Postprandial members joining Kate, Diana, Gil, and Dave for the evening were Al Turof and his lovely wife Sue, Nancy Scott as Chief Timer, Drew Martin as Assistant Timer, Sudipta Das as Teller, Kelly Sauke Roland as Closer, and Ed Oberhofer as Judge. I was able to sit back and enjoy the night along with Gloria Langston, soon-to-be Postprandial Member Glenn Burdett, Dave’s wife Allison Pope, and Dave’s father Daniel Pope.
Get out your calendars and ink in the evening of Friday, April 3, when the Central Division Contest comes to Napa Gino’s!

District 65 Fall Conference Report, Part 2
Here is Part 2 of a report from Postprandial member Ed Oberhofer. Part 1 is here.
The District 65 Fall Conference held at the Carrier Circle Holiday Inn was a full day affair. It began with breakfast, during which we learned from 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking, Craig Valentine, about the art of public speaking. Craig explained how to effectively use the skills we practice in Toastmasters to become successful public speakers. At the heart of his presentation were the principles of good story telling and engaging the audience members in ways that they will find both palatable and comprehensible.
There were three educational sessions. The first session offered a diverse set of topics, which ranged from using statistics in presentations to child safety. The second session had topics on leadership and giving good evaluations. The third session was an address by Toastmasters International Director John Rich, DTM to the entire conference. John urged all of us to view that which seemingly stands in our way as the adventure we seek, rather than viewing it as an obstacle to our success.
District 65 Fall Conference Report, Part 1
Following is Part 1 of a report submitted by Postprandial member Ed Oberhofer. Part 2 is here.
Hello my Fellow Postprandial Club Members,
I’m posting this from the District 65 Fall Conference being held at the Carrier Circle Holiday Inn in Syracuse, NY. At first, it seemed odd to be attending a conference with the theme “Toastmasters on Fire: A Flame that Can’t be Quenched” in the midst of a lake effect snow event. Nonetheless, clearly demonstrating that words do matter, the conference quickly began to live up to its name.
Perhaps the biggest story early on was the weather, which caused the delayed arrival of many participants. As a result, the start of the Table Topics Contest was officially delayed by a half hour (and started even later). The contestants were asked to respond to the question: “It is said that a person who has two friends is truly rich. What qualities do you look for in a friend?” The quality of the responses was very good, and this made for a very competitive contest. Personally, I was inspired to up my own Table Topics skills, though the highlight of the night may have been the impressive interviewing done by the Contest Master, Bill Spizuoco. He struck me as an eccentric personality directly fueled by life’s primal fire. He remained very present to the responses of the interviewees, which is a skill we would all do well to continuously practice in all aspects of our lives.
